	Karen McKeown President NSW BRANCH Organisation: Penrith City Council Position: Councillor Backgound: I was elected to ALGWA Executive in 2004. My educational background is in Commerce with a major in Management and sub-major in Law and Employee Relations, my profession is in Industrial Relations. I am passionate about advocating for greater participation of women in government at all levels but especially in local government. I would like to see more women councillors. In particular I want to promote ALGWA to all and engage women who work on council to become involved and develop their skills. I currently maintain the ALGWA Website and I am an active member on the Executive. I was also an active member on the Round Table discussing the National Framework for Women in Local Government. For those of you interested in joining this wonderful organisation I support you as this has been one of the most fulfilling Associations I have ever been associated with. I was employed by Parramatta City Council from 1991-1996 in the records department as the Legal Documents Officer and was elected as a staff representative for 5 years. In 1997 I was appointed as a metropolitan organiser in the MEU whereby I represented local government employees in some of the largest councils in the metropolitan area of Sydney. In 1998 I was appointed as the MEU Child Care Organiser/Women's Officer. I have had the pleasure of running a number of campaigns for women in local government such as Paid Maternity Leave, Pay Equity, Right for Family Day Carers, I was the USU Co-ordinator for the YR@W Campaign. I currently hold the position of Manager Clerical & Administration for the United Services Union which is the largest branch of the Australian Services Union. I have represented local government employees on a number of bodies including: NSW Ombudsman Legislation NSW Children's Commission National Women's Consultative Committee Children Services ITAB Delegate to ALP Conference Delegate to ACTU Congress Bullying & Harrassment Task Force My interests are playing and coaching women's soccer at an elite level. Even when questioned about having five children and running for election with all the commitments, Fiona and husband went on to have another child and are Foster Care parents. Fiona believes having children and staying in touch with your community proves beneficial in keeping you finger on the pulse and being aware of what is happening. Fiona moved to Orange in 1991 and enjoys her career as a Registered Theatre Nurse and In Charge of shift at Orange Base Hospital. Fiona has a love for the environment and actively seeks out better pathways to save the environment. Fiona is know for the Fairy Sparkle Garden she initiated building with other community members for the children's ward garden at Orange Base Hospital. Fiona has also been active in Founding Orange Star Search a fundraiser over the past 3 years show casing local singers. In Council Fiona chairs the Youth and Local Interagency, and particularly enjoys the outcome of chairing the Christmas Street Party. She was also Chair of the working party for the BMX track which brought about two tracks (1 competitive & 1 recreational) and a recreational play area for everyone to enjoy. Fiona has a particular interest in community services and enjoys the direct contact with people. She has been a member of ALGWA since 2004 and now as an executive member would like to see the representation of women in Local Government increased. My support of public libraries is my priority as I see it has an emphasis on equity and equality and provides an opportunity for everyone to reach their potential. In celebrating International Women's Day I have been instrumental in now having a collection of media on Women's Mentoring and issues to a value of $4000. I have also been an executive member of the NSW Mining Related Councils Association for ten years addressing state issues as well as local community issues of mining. She has worked for over 16 years as a community development, youth work and commnity education before she made a career change towards environmental issues and became a Community Waste Education Officer in 2000. Christine became a councillor in March 2003 at the last election. This is her first term as a councillor and stands on a platform of social justice and equity. She believes in sustainable development that also considers the impact on the social and ecological environment. She hase been a member of ALGWA since the first year she was elected and has since been a keen advocate for women in elected positions. I represent a very diverse multicultural City, and I'm a board and Chairperson of many Committees, there's over 130 different languages spoken in Canterbury City. It has been a big challenge since I was elected to Local Government, being a woman and of non English speaking background had even made prouder representing who ever in need to be heard with anything they want to address. Darriea has been instrumental in the development of ALGWA (NSW) Strategic Plan. Darriea has been a Councillor with the Broken Hill City Council since 1995 and works in Population Health for the Far West Area Health Service. Darriea has also been on the Department for Women's Advisory Group for the Hands Up for Women in Council Project and the 10 Point Plan project. Darriea was also been appointed to the National Framework for Women in Local Government Coordination Group for NSW. Darriea is committed to the advancement of all Women in Local Government. Denise has been a Councillor at Mosman since 1999 and has worked to initiate, consult, inform and lobby for community issues such as access, traffic and safety measures, balancing heritage conservation with resident needs and opposing over development. Jackie has served on Council since 1995. Jackie served as Mayor from 2005 - 2006 and Deputy Mayor on three previous occasions, 1998, 2001 and 2002 Secretary of the Australian Local Government Women's Association for five years. Represented on the Hawkesbury River County Council, St Clair/Erskine Park Safety Committee, Local Traffic Committee, the Sister Cities Association, Flood Mitigation Authority, Area Assistance Program, to name a few of many! I have been employed for approximately 15 years as a council officer. Currently I hold the position of Convenor of the Joint Consultative Committee at Penrith City Council. I am an Executive Member of the United Services Union and hold a position on the USU Women's Committee. I am a mother of 2 and a grandmother of 4. My aim is to grow the membership of ALGWA (NSW) and to encourage women who have an interest in Local Government to become active. I have attended all but one ALGWA NSW conference since 2004, and acknowledge the important role the organisation plays in supporting and encouraging women in local government. At the 2009 conference I was elected to the Executive of ALGWA NSW. Many aspects of local government interest me and I am on council committees dealing with playgrounds, libraries, the arts, womens issues, literacy etc. My background is in publishing but a major interest of mine (as well as family and representing my constituents on council) is the NSW P&C Federation, a lobby group for public education, where I hold the office of Country Vice President. I believe we are all equal and all levels of government have to acknowledge that by decisions which show social justice and financial equity. Nicole is a hard working community activist with a strong commitment to social justice, cultural diversity and gender equity. Nicole's professional background is in environmental management and strategic policy development. Nicole is currently working as a Senior Policy Advisor in Aboriginal Affairs. Nicole is passionate about improving community and family service provision by local government. She is a strong advocate for women and has taken a lead role in the campaign for increased paid maternity (and paternity) leave for local government employees. Nicole is also focussed on increasing the level of representation by women in local government - as Councillors and also in Council's senior management positions. Contact details: Email: ncampbell@ryde.nsw.gov.au Helen Cooper Executive Member NSW BRANCH Organisation: Penrith City Council Position: Corporate Planning Officer Backgound: I am a mother of six adult children and grandmother to 17 children. I understand the needs of the family and the demands of a career and have a good ear for real listening. I work for Penrith City Council as a Corporate Planning Officer in developing the annual Operational Plan and managing an IT program. I have been fortunate to have worked in numerous areas of Council and to have worked closely with Directors, Senior Management and all levels of staff. This has given me an understanding of the different requirements of residents and also staff, and shown me the differing perceptions of those needs at various hierarchy level. My position allows me to understand how Council works, its limitations, workforce issues, the needs of the residents and Council's commitment to making this world more sustainable.
